Agreement to these terms
These Terms of Service (“Terms”) govern your use of metsalsa.com, operated by Salsa at the Met (“MetSalsa,” “we,” “us,” or “our”), including the video library, the Roots of Salsa archive, and paid memberships. By using the site or subscribing, you agree to these Terms and to our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the site.
About MetSalsa
MetSalsa celebrates the life and work of José Luis Obando Borja (1954–2026) and continues his educational mission. References to The Metropolitan Museum of Art describe José’s work with the museum. They do not mean the museum sponsors or endorses this website or its memberships.
The video library
- Free films. Public films in the library are free to watch on our site through YouTube’s embedded player. No account is needed.
- Members-only content. Annotated lecture cuts, breakdowns, the full archive, and other content marked for members are available only to subscribers with an active membership.
- YouTube. Films are hosted on YouTube. When you watch them, you also agree to be bound by the YouTube Terms of Service, and Google’s handling of your information is described in the Google Privacy Policy.
- Availability. We review each film for rights before it is published. We may add, edit, or remove films at any time, including when rights questions arise. Playback depends on YouTube and may sometimes be unavailable.
- Permitted use. You may watch library content for personal, educational, and non-commercial purposes. Teachers may show free public films in a classroom through the YouTube player. You may not download, copy, re-upload, rebroadcast, sell, or publicly perform library content, or show members-only content to people without a membership, unless we give written permission.
Accounts
When memberships open, you will need an account to access members-only content. You must give accurate information, keep your login secure, and tell us about any unauthorized use. A membership is for one person and may not be shared. You must be at least 18 to subscribe.
Subscriptions and billing
- Plans and prices. We offer a free tier and paid memberships, such as the Founding Member plan at $10 per month. The plan, price, billing period, and any taxes are shown to you before you subscribe. Prices are in U.S. dollars.
- Automatic renewal. Paid memberships renew automatically at the end of each billing period, monthly or annual as you choose, at the then-current price, until you cancel. By subscribing, you authorize us, through our payment processor Stripe, to charge your payment method at the start of your membership and at each renewal.
- Billing date. You are charged on the day you subscribe and on the same day of each following billing period.
- Taxes. Prices may not include applicable sales or similar taxes, which we will add where required.
- Failed payments. If a payment fails, Stripe may retry it, and we may pause or end your access to members-only content until payment succeeds.
- Price changes. We will tell you about any price change at least 30 days before it applies to your next renewal. You can cancel before then. If you do not cancel, the new price applies from your next renewal.
- Free trials and promotions. If we offer a free trial or discount, its length and the price that follows will be shown at sign-up. Unless you cancel before the trial ends, your membership converts to a paid membership and you will be charged the stated price.
- Receipts. We send a receipt by email for each charge.
Cancellation
You can cancel at any time, online, through the billing portal link in your receipt email or your account, or by contacting us through our privacy and contact form. Cancellation stops future renewals. You keep access to members-only content until the end of the billing period you already paid for, and you will not be charged again.
Refunds
Payments are non-refundable, and we do not give refunds or credits for partial billing periods, except where the law requires otherwise or where we decide to make an exception. If we discontinue a paid membership, we will refund the unused portion of any prepaid period.
Changes to the membership
We may change what memberships include. If we make a change that materially reduces what you receive, we will tell you in advance and you may cancel.
Content you submit
When you share a memory, photo, or other material, you confirm that you have the right to share it. You give us a non-exclusive, royalty-free permission to display, edit for length, and publish it on the site and in materials that honor José’s legacy. We may decline or remove submissions at our discretion.
Acceptable use
You agree not to break the law on the site, interfere with its operation, try to get around access controls or payment, scrape or copy content at scale, or post anything unlawful, abusive, or that infringes someone else’s rights.
Intellectual property
The site, its text, design, annotations, essays, and the films and lectures in the library belong to MetSalsa or its licensors and are protected by copyright and other laws. Some recordings in the archive are in the public domain. Our selection, arrangement, and annotation of them are our own work. Nothing in these Terms gives you ownership of any content.
Copyright complaints
If you believe material on the site infringes your copyright, contact us through the contact form with a description of the work, where it appears on our site, your contact details, and a statement that you believe in good faith the use is not authorized. We will review and remove material where appropriate.
Disclaimers
The site and its content are provided “as is” and “as available.” To the extent the law allows, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We do not guarantee that the site or any film will always be available or error-free.
Limitation of liability
To the extent the law allows, MetSalsa will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages. Our total liability for any claim relating to the site or your membership is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim, or $50 if you paid nothing. Some places do not allow these limits, so they may not apply to you.
Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Washington, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute will be resolved in the state or federal courts located in King County, Washington, unless the law where you live gives you the right to bring it elsewhere.
Changes to these terms
We may update these Terms. We will post the new version here with a new effective date. For members, we will give at least 30 days’ notice by email of material changes to subscription terms, and you may cancel before they apply.
