Who we are
Salsa at the Met (“MetSalsa,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) operates metsalsa.com, a website that celebrates the life and work of José Luis Obando Borja and offers a video library, an archive, programs, and paid memberships. This Privacy Policy explains what personal information we collect, how we use and share it, and the choices you have.
Information we collect
Information you give us
- Memories and messages. When you share a memory, we collect your name, email address, your relationship to José, and your message.
- Program inquiries. When you ask about a program, we collect your name, email address, institution, audience, preferred format, and message.
- Email lists. When you join the Salsa Circle or the founding-member list, we collect your email address.
- Privacy requests. When you contact us about this policy, we collect the details you provide.
Membership and subscription information
When paid memberships open and you subscribe, we collect your name, email address, chosen plan, subscription status, billing history, and the billing country or postal code needed for tax purposes. Payments are processed by Stripe. We do not receive or store your full card number. Stripe handles your payment details under its own privacy policy at stripe.com/privacy.
Information collected automatically
- Analytics. We use Google Analytics and our website platform’s own analytics to understand how visitors use the site. These tools collect information such as pages viewed, referring sites, device and browser type, and approximate location, and Google Analytics uses cookies to do so.
- Server logs. Our hosting providers record technical information, such as IP address and browser type, to deliver and secure the site.
The video library and YouTube
Films in the MetSalsa library are hosted on YouTube and shown on our site through YouTube’s privacy-enhanced embedded player (youtube-nocookie.com). According to YouTube, this player does not store information about you to personalize your experience unless you play the video. When you play a film, YouTube and Google may collect information about you and set cookies under their own terms.
When you watch films in the library, you also agree to be bound by the YouTube Terms of Service. Google’s handling of your information is described in the Google Privacy Policy.
We do not ask you to sign in to YouTube or Google on our site, and we do not access your YouTube or Google account. We may receive aggregate viewing statistics for our own channel from YouTube, which do not identify you.
Members-only films will be shown only to subscribers with an active membership. To provide that access, we keep a record of your membership status.
How we use information
We use personal information to:
- Provide the library, archive, programs, and memberships, including giving members access to members-only content
- Process subscriptions, payments, renewals, cancellations, and refunds, and send receipts and billing notices
- Tell you before a price change or other material change to your subscription
- Respond to memories, inquiries, and requests, and publish memories you submit for the tribute (with your permission)
- Send email updates you asked for
- Understand and improve how the site is used
- Protect the site, prevent fraud, and meet legal, tax, and accounting obligations
How we share information
We do not sell your personal information. We share it only with:
- Service providers that run the site for us, including our website and form platform, our hosting providers, Google (Google Workspace email and Google Analytics), YouTube (video playback), and Stripe (payments and subscription billing). They may use the information only to provide services to us or as their own policies describe for their services.
- Legal and safety recipients when required by law or to protect rights, safety, and property.
- A successor if the site or its archive is transferred to another organization that continues José’s work, subject to this policy.
You can unsubscribe from our emails at any time by using the link in the email or by contacting us. If you are a member, we will still send messages about your subscription, such as receipts, renewal notices, and changes to price or terms.
Cookies and your choices
You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. You can opt out of Google Analytics with Google’s browser add-on. Blocking YouTube cookies may prevent library films from playing.
How long we keep information
We keep personal information only as long as we need it for the purposes above. We keep subscription and payment records for as long as tax and accounting laws require. When you ask us to delete your information, we delete it unless we must keep it by law.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to know what personal information we hold about you, to get a copy, to correct it, to delete it, and to opt out of certain uses. We honor these requests for everyone, wherever they live. Use the form below and we will respond within 45 days. We will not treat you differently for using these rights.
Children
This site is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. Memberships are for adults 18 and older. If you believe a child has given us information, contact us and we will delete it.
Security
We use reasonable measures to protect personal information, and our payment processor is PCI-DSS compliant. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure.
Visitors outside the United States
We are based in the United States, and information we collect is processed in the United States.
